Upian and the CFDT share a story that started in 2016 with Parlons Travailthe major survey about work, open to all workers and former workers in France. This survey, which was a great success with 200,000 respondents and over 20 million questions answered, marked the start of a long-term collaboration.

After 85 years and 3759 printed issues, Syndicalisme Hebdo, the weekly magazine for CFDT activists decided to undergo its digital revolution and chose Upian to support it.

Co-conception workshops during lockdown

The first design workshops with members of the Syndicalisme Hebdo editorial team were scheduled for March 2020. The health crisis and the national lockdown gave a special tone to this design phase, which was carried out by the 12 members of the newspaper’s editorial team.

Editorial workshop, card sorting, Six-to-One, the design workshops took place via video conference, with the help of online tools for storyboarding and exchanging mock-ups.

One-Sorting the Cards :
Card sorting is a method used to build an information architecture by involving end users. The first step is to draw up an inventory of all the functionalities and content and transform them into cards. These cards are used as a basis for arguments put forward by different groups. This allows a confrontation of ideas and requires an effort of argumentation.

Six-to-One : The 6-to-1 allows future users to create interface proposals very quickly. In groups, we asked the editorial team to create 6 initial proposals for the site’s home page and for the page of the weekly edition within a limited timeframe. Each participant then presented and explained their choices before combining the most interesting ideas and proposing a final interface.

These online workshops enabled everyone to take part in the design and were an important way of building trust at a time when relationships were characterised by social distance.

Tailor-made developments : CMS headless, PWA and mobile apps

To best meet the needs of Syndicalisme Hebdo’s editorial team, Upian chose to develop a bespoke headless CMS based on the Symfony framework, coupled with a Progressive Web App based on the Nuxt.js framework and hybrid mobile applications for iOS and Android.

A continuous deployment process on AWS has been put in place via GitLab with the CFDT service providers in charge of hosting.

Transparent interconnection with the CFDT Information System

Upian worked in tight collaboration with the CFDT IT Department and its various service providers in charge of the Information System building blocks to integrate the member authentication system, the subscription and unsubscription mechanism for the Syndicalisme Hebdo magazine and to set up a notification system on the member’s personal space.

These developments were completed in a very short time and in line with the initial schedule.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the CFDT teams for their responsiveness and professionalism.
