On May 21, 2015, France Télévisions launched a new iPhone application that creates a custom mobile television channel based on user tastes. An innovative platform for which the design and development work was well under way.
The only thing missing was a name and a graphic charter that would not only embody innovation and customization, but would also turn it into a sleek application that appealed to the masses.
We don’t get to do this kind of work very often, but we love doing it when we get the chance! After hours of brainstorming, discussing, exchanging, our proposal included several different possibilities, including the one that was finally chosen: francetv zoom.
Zoom is a common word we frequently use, with its share of expressions (“zoom factor”, “zoom in”) and related movements (spreading apart the thumb and index). It’s a mainstream word that can be read in all languages.
Zoom is related to proximity, to what we see clearly – and to what we take pleasure in watching.
Among the plethora of shows I can watch, Zoom gives me a close-up of the ones I like, and highlights their most striking clips. Watching Zoom is a bit like watching a television digest prepared specifically for me.
And that’s what the app is really for: depending on how much time you have, the application adapts its video selection to better suit your needs. That way, you never have to miss the best parts of your favourite shows. Unrivalled in terms of content and recommendation algorithm, FranceTV Zoom is a true editorialized medium that evolves according to feedback you provide on all the clips you watch.
In addition to the name and logo, Upian designed the FranceTV Zoom graphic charter. The motion charter was created in collaboration with Paris agency ZeroSix. These charters were applied to most of the application’s screens and stages before being integrated by the France Télévisions technical teams.
Our work seems to have paid off, since on June 16, FranceTV Zoom received the prestigious “Best App” award during the 2015 AppAwards.
The icing on the cake to reward the hard work put in by the France Télévisions teams, with whom it was a great pleasure to collaborate.
