By MSF & Upian, Bodies at War recounts the stories of Qatada, Hassan, Joud, Abu Wesam and their families whose lives have been scarred by years of war in the Middle East.

Four portraits about reconstruction

Each character is a victim of the armed conflicts in their home countries: Iraq, Syria and Yemen.

After their lives were turned upside down in an instant, they still bear today the physical and psychological scars of their wounds.

All have undergone years of treatment at MSF’s hospital in Amman, Jordan.

Through a mobile experience of 10-15 minutes, the project provides a glimpse into their lives before the life-shattering events as well as  their lives today—journeys from injury to reconstruction.

Abu Wesam

“I’ve become mother and father to my children.”
For the past ten years, this Yemeni father has been fighting so that his children, who are severely burned, can live a normal life far from the war. In order for his family to be treated, he had to spend years between Jordan and Yemen.

Joud

“I’m 23, and I’ve already lived three lives.”
On the brink of adulthood, this young Syrian was wounded twice because of the fighting in Syria. Today, he is gradually rebuilding himself in Jordan.

Qatada

“My wheelchair’s become part of who I am.”
As survivor of a mine explosion in Yemen, Qatada lost both his legs and is trying to lead a normal life. He now lives in Jordan with his wife and four children.

Hassan

“I’m happy to be back home.”
Victim of a car bomb attack, this Iraqi made the choice to return to his family in Baghdad after years of care in Jordan.
